A new fundraising initiative, launched this week, allows church attendees to donate their old books and to take other books to enjoy at home. ‘One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure’ and we hope this adage will be reflected in a virtuous literary cycle of read – donate – read – donate!

A suggested donation of £1 per book will, God willing, help us support those in need both home and abroad. Members, children, adherents and visitors to the church are all welcome to participate. At the time of launch, recipe books and theology tomes seem to be the most popular genres. Keep an eye out for new arrivals, because once they are gone, they’re gone!

Philp, Ron, Alun and John enjoyed challenging and edifying lectures in a context of worship and warm fellowship at the Ligonier Ministries 2019 London Conference. Under the conference title 'The Light of the Word' Alistair Begg, Sinclair Ferguson, Mark Johnston, Albert Mohler, Burk Parsons and Michael Reeves addressed the substantial audience at Central Hall Westminster.

"Jesus Christ has told us that He is the light of the world, and if we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness. Yet He has also told us that Christians are the light of the world. This is because He has redeemed us and caused His light to shine in our hearts, so that we might shine forth in the darkness ourselves. In order to grow in Christ and become more effective servants of Him, we must know the essential truths about Christ and what it means to live the Christian life. This conference will present core truths of the Christian faith in order to equip believers to shine as lights in this world."

Philip, Adrian and John attended the EPCEW Annual Presbytery Conference in Sheffield on Fri 25 – Sat 26 January. They were warmly welcomed and, unexpectedly, became actively involved when Philip was asked to introduce a speaker, pray and chair a question and answer session, Adrian also prayed publicly for the Word of God to be preached with authority and efficacy.

This year’s conference theme was “On Preaching Sermons: On Hearing Sermons”. In all, eight papers were delivered, bookended by two sermons. Each talk was followed by a substantial time for questions and discussion and the schedule was interspersed with fellowship and prayer time.

Topics included the theology, preparation, delivery and hearing of preaching, preachers as ambassadors and the work of the Holy Spirit in the congregation when hearing sermons. Our officers found the content of the conference biblical, challenging and encouraging, and the tone of debate and worship to be respectful, warm and God-centred.

We thank God for blessing our brethren with an encouraging weekend under God’s word, in fellowship with fellow servants of our Lord, for keeping them safe during their travels and their testimony that they were edified and instructed from the Scriptures.
